Bug Off-What to do when you are Up North
We love summer, but we don’t love the bugs that want to share summer with us. With a few simple precautions, you can enjoy the outdoors this summer. Before you step outside it’s important to remember a few basics when it comes to dodging bugs. For starters, apply repellent before leaving home and reapply every few hours to ensure continued protection. (for store bought follow label instructions) White and khaki-colored clothes with long sleeves and pants are still your best defense wardrobe wise. Hats are also a good idea too. Bees are thought to shy away from people you wear them. Also, go natural and avoid perfumes and scented prodcuts.
Check out the CDC’s website www.cdc.gov to gauge your risk and choose the best repellent for you.
Some natural things to try:
Essential oils: Cedarwood, rose geranium, peppermint, basil, lemongrass and neem are all good choices to give a try.
B Vitamins: B Complex can make you a less likely target for mosquitoes.
Diet: Skip bananas. Even after being digested, the fruit can attract mosquitos by giving off a bug friendly scent.
