A Guide to the Local Michigan Wineries to Visit

The Leelanau Peninsula Wine Trail has over 20 award-winning wineries stretching from the West Arm of Grand Traverse Bay to the Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes. Exploring the local wineries found along the trail is a great way to take in the beauty of the Leelanau Peninsula while discovering award-winning wineries. Enjoy a delicious home-cooked breakfast at your Northern Michigan rental, decide who’s going to be the designated driver, and set off for a day of fun and wine.

With over 20 wineries, cellars, and tasting rooms to visit, there are plenty of places to explore, but here are a few of our favorites.

  1. Found in Northport, Dune Bird Winery is a spot that appeals to everyone. Not only can you sip on their exceptional vinos, but there’s also an espresso bar and plenty of options for the non-wine drinker.
  2. Visit Gilchrist Farm Winery’s downtown Suttons Bay tasting room to try their wines. Because this is a farm-to-table food and wine destination, you can enjoy your wine with one of their expertly paired small-plate creations.
  3. For a unique winery experience, visit Green Bird Organic Cellars. Say hello to the animals that call this spot home, go for a walk through the vines, and end your visit in the tasting room.
  4. Dedicated to crafting exceptional wines, Shady Lane Cellars is a boutique winery in Suttons Bay. Here, you can find sparkling wines, whites, reds, and so much more.
  5. Bel Lago Vineyard & Winery began serving wine on the edge of Lake Leelanau in 1999. While known for its reds, this winery also focuses on several white wines, white blends, and ciders.
  6. Located halfway between Suttons Bay and Northport, Leelanau Cellars is an excellent place to try everything from sweet to dry wines while taking in views of West Grand Traverse Bay.
  7. Verterra Winery bottles over 20 different wines made from grapes grown on its 40+ acre estate. Choose from two different experiences: classic tasting in the Leland tasting room or flights at The Ridge at Verterra.
