Choose the Right Accommodation for You and Your Pet

Many vacation rentals are located near other homes. Please be respectful of the neighbors, their yards and beachfront. It is private property if it is not a part of your rental. Also be aware of your pets behavior and keep barking to zero.

Vacation rentals and cabins offer great amenities for pets and their humans, and they are often located near outdoor areas that welcome your pet. Please note, in Northern Michigan most areas require your pet to be on leash. Also, be prepared to clean up your pet waste. Make sure your pet has tags and a phone number listed in case he should get lost. So many pets come up missing every year here in Northern Michigan.They are often found but have no collar, tags or micro-chip. Do not chance losing your pet!

Regarding service animals (from Michigan.gov) : The ADA defines a service animal as a guide dog, signal dog, or other animal individually trained to provide assistance to a person with a disability. If they meet this definition, animals are considered service animals under the ADA regardless of whether they have been licensed or certified by state or local government. Service animals perform some of the functions and tasks that the person with a disability cannot perform for him or herself. Guide dogs are one type of service animal, used by some people who are blind. This is the type of service animal with which most people are familiar. Service animals also
help people with other kinds of disabilities in their daily activities. Some examples include:
• Alerting persons with hearing disabilities to sounds.
• Pulling wheelchairs or carrying and picking up things for persons with mobility disabilities.
• Assisting persons with mobility disabilities with balance.

Emotional support animals, comfort animals, and therapy dogs are not service animals under Title II and Title III of the ADA. The tasks performed by a service animal must be directly related to the individual’s disability. It does not matter if you have a note from a doctor stating that you have a disability and need the animal for emotional support. A doctor’s letter does not turn an animal into a service animal. While comfort animals are often used as part of a medical treatment plan, they are not considered service animals under the ADA. They do not have special training to perform tasks that assist people with disabilities, and are not limited to working with
people with disabilities. Therefore, comfort animals are not covered by federal laws protecting the use of service animals and are ONLY permitted in Visit Up North’s pet-friendly rentals.

Visit Up North is permitted to ask 1. Is the animal a service animal required because of a disability, and 2. What work or task has the animal been trained to perform?

All pets that bring their owners are expected to follow policies.
Please read the following policies regarding staying in one of our rentals with a pet.

• Clean up ALL pet waste and any messes your pet makes.
• Supervise your pet and keep it on a leash if need be. Please bring your pet with you
  when you leave the cottage. If a need arises you are unable to do so please kennel your pet for the safety of the rental and your pet.
• Respect the neighbors and do not allow the pet to enter their yard or property.
• Keep furnishings clean. If possible, do not allow the pet on the furniture. Bring an extra sheet or towel to cover where the pet may be sleeping. (see below) To make your pet more comfortable bring their bedding or blanket. Please keep barking at zero!
• It is a good idea to carry your pet vet records with you in case of an emergency.
• Report any damages to Visit Up North immediately!

Because these are privately owned homes, we must be assured that the property will be left in good condition and not damaged. We trust that you will respect the rental and let us continue to accept pets.

Remember, you & your pets are ambassadors for all the pets that travel in the future! Travel courteously and responsibly, and our pet-friendly rentals will continue to welcome pets and that is a tail wagging good thing.

A non-refundable pet fee is required. The amount of the fee is based on length of stay and number of pets (ask us for details!). Two dogs is typically the maximum in our pet-friendly rentals, but not all pet properties allow multiple pets.

During the summer months, we are at the height of pet travel. With most pets traveling by car, it’s time for a reminder about the dangers of leaving your pet in a parked car. The temperature inside a car can skyrocket after just a few minutes. Parking in the shade or leaving the windows cracked does very little to alleviate this pressure cooker.
